Current Progress

April 25th, 2011

I am currently working on the long-awaited multiple shapes feature. It seems that I’ll finally release it in May, so you haven’t wait too long. Here are some notes on current progress.

Let’s start from pictures, I’ve already posted few in Twitter, here are some more:

The upcoming release has very simple shapes manipulation tools, yet allowing to compose a complex scene. The composing is performed using the “Transformation” page of the shape. As the “images” page shows images for the particular shape, I moved it closer to the Properties and Transformation pages. Here’s how the Windows versions looks like now (the new UI is not finished yet, but the overall style is clearly visible):

I haven’t yet decided on the Mac version’s interface, so it probably will be left the same as in the previous versions. But I have a strong desire to unify the UI of both Windows and Mac versions of Box Shot 3D.

Since the upcoming version 3.3 Box Shot 3D will not support some old project formats from versions older than 2.12, so if you still keep such projects, you’d better re-save them.

The upcoming version brings the “alternative rotation order” option that changes the way Box Shot 3D rotates shapes. This allows some rotations that are not possible now.

Please let me know what do you think about the new user interface of Windows version. Should I do the same for Mac version, as well?

I look forward to your comments :)

Hey vitaly, beautiful cant wait to play with it.

As or the UI on MAC: I’d be happy to keep it, I find the light color UI a little friendlier to work with actually.

is it possible to rotate single shapes in the scene and sort of link all shapes together rotating the entire scene? that would be nice.

Thanks to all for the feedback. So, let’s leave the Mac user interface as is for now.

Now some answers:

James Smith, no, sorry. This release is completely dedicated to the multiple shapes feature.

Juan, as I said in e-mail, please send a screenshot of the issue.

Thanks for the “Clone” suggestion – it will be added.

As for presets, I am going to add “scene presets” in further releases – pre-defined sets of objects to start from.

Regarding gizmo, I decided to avoid it for now because of two-steps preview rendering. Perhaps it will not be very useful because of this.

Tim McAlpi, you can rotate and move all the shapes in the scene. You can move the camera as well – this looks like rotating all the shapes simultaneously.

More questions and suggestions are welcome :)

Thanks so much Vitaly for this wonderful upgrade. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I like the look of the images I see. And to be honest, I’ve been waiting to have the opportunity to do two shapes. Thanks so much. More power to your efforts. From Nigeria.

Hi again, I want to propose put an object over other easilly. For example, place a book on the floor and other over it. Thank you for your work vitaly. Also want to ask for commentaries about an multilingual version (English, Spanish, French, ect.). God bless you. Juan.

I’m happy because you will create a feature-request post. I really think that it will makes more easy your work, and our too. Thank you. God bless you.

For the MAC UI, i suggest a unified version that use the tab UI “à la Adobe CS5″ instead of the button bar while keeping the light gray color scheme.

Thank you for your good work.

Hi, thanks for putting the feature request post online.

Like others, I’d like to see a clone feature.

Also, it would be great to have some quick presets for information products. For example, an array of 5 (cloned) dvds – 3 along the bottom and 2 along the top, in the formation of an upside down “olympic rings” symbol.

On a different note, have you ever considered putting out a version for books only? I work with about 200 self publishers who probably don’t need all the features of boxshot 3d, just a 3d book cover. It would be great if I could offer them a reduced price version for books only.

Another related idea is offering an affiliate program so that people could sign up to promote your product and would make a commission from sales. Thanks!

Hi, I do not agree with Nicolas Cloutier to unify the user interface of Windows and Mac, with Adobe CS5 interface, I would rather a user interface like Office 2010, but the best interface is Vitaly’s proposal, I think it should be his design and not Adobe’s design. Anyway, if you can not unify the interface in Windows and Mac with the Vitaly’s new style (it would be best), I would like to have it in Windows, it looks very well with Windows’ environment. And if you or anybody have a proposal, I want we see it and we decide in vote. I really think that we need, is not a multilingual version of the program, but it is a multilingual tutorial or manual. Thanks Vitaly and best regards, oh, and dont worry because so much features was requested, you can to implement it in different releases. Juan.

Thanks to all for the comments. I am going to release the preview version of the multiple shapes feature in the next 24 hours. At least if nothing goes wrong here.

It is quite stable, so it probably can be called the release, yet I want it to be tested here first.
