Weekend Fun

February 11th, 2011

Well, it is better once to see, so here is the beta version of Box Shot 3D 3.2.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A BETA VERSION.
IT CONTAINS BUGS. IT MAY CRASH. IT MAY CORRUPT YOUR PROJECTS AND KILL YOUR CAT.
YOU ARE WARNED.

Now, as the official part is finished, we may continue. Yes, this version has some known bugs like small holes in objects’ sides or not-yet-fixed mapping at some headbands. However, it shouldn’t crash and make bad things. Please report everything that it does wrong.

What to check:

  • Rendering speed. For most scenes it should run faster (there are some exceptions though, like blurred reflections)
  • New lighting. Please report if the scene looks completely different in 3.1 and 3.2
  • New “bright” skydome lighting mode – what do you think?
  • New quality modes: web and print – are the results OK?
  • New preview panel – do you like the realtime rendering?
  • Antialiasing – have you seen the changes?
  • Batch processing – does it work as expected?
  • Resizing window – is it OK?

As this version uses slightly different project format, please do not save changes to the projects you may want to open with older versions.

Please report about anything that looks wrong or doesn’t work as expected. Please do not ask to add shapes or features here, as there will be no new features in 3.2 – just bugfixes. I’ll create a feature-request post a bit later.

Thank you.

P.S. Since the new version has been released, the beta is not available anymore

Hi, is it not possible to drop a shadow on black backgrounds?

Example: White shadow on a black background.

Daniel, I’ve never seen white shadows, sorry :) Could you send some images?

Rendering is very nice used everything so it took a while, but overall very nice!

Only things I noticed were:
* File didn’t load the images even though they were in the same folder as the Boxshot3D file.
* The perspective flattened out a bit compared to the original scene.
* The pages on the books look somehow less realistic, bit too white than they were before.

Other than that love it :)

Can’t wait for final release :D

3.2: When open saved files, they lost position.
3.1 + 3.2: What do the presets?

Glenboid, thanks. The images issue has been fixed. The “white books” problem was discussed here. As for the perspective issue, could you send me two screenshots and the project. Have to take a look.

Bengt Moll, I’m not sure what do you mean by position. There is a problem with loading materials that is fixed in the internal builds. All the rest seems to load fine.

Presets store scene-related information and don’t store the shape itself. They are useful if you need to render several objects with the same lighting or reflection parameters. You may treat them as “light projects”.

Hi Vitaly,

Sent you a link via the contact page for the files :)

Hi Vitaly,
thank you, now I understand the preset function. The other error no longer occurs. Is there a new beta available?

Best wishes, Bengt

I do not like “print/web” option, I would like to be able to specify the pixels or size… i am afraid this is a step back.

shading is great.

multiple object option is most important to me.

there should be some more steps in render option, web and print is ok BUT should be more flexible steps

I confirm, that should be draft/speed option

As I see between times render, new web set is similar to old preview set and print is little more than production.

I render cofee mug with spectacular light, blured shadows and bumps maps, on 1200x1200px. In draft render from 3.1 it take 90sek to get jpg file. In web render from 3.2 it take 40 minutes, it was 26 time slower. (MacBook Pro 2.54ghz C2D)

I offeen use box3D with custom 3ds files to makes diffrent shoots for product presentatons. I must do 10-20 renders in short time to make previzualization of packagins designs. If in 3.2 will be no maks draft/speed render option I will be must to find quicker solution in other program :( .

if I would like to render VR visualization in batch AppleScript mode from 108 renders (36 horizontall x 3 vertical shoots) I must be waiting 72 hours. Thats make no sense

Glenboid, Bengt Moll, thanks.

TimMcG, what exactly do you want to specify? Both “print” and “web” are just methods of rendering. Both has their own pros and cons. You can specify the image size on the same page, it is not related to the rendering method.

Wojtek, actually print and web have nothing with the previous rendering quality switch. They use completely different approach. Now I see that I need to add at least one more option: “draft”.

Yes, draft/speed mode in 3.1 is VERY useful for qick work with many designs of one product and for making 3D VR objects when I must do obove 100 renders.

Wojtek, the main reason of removing draft mode is that the preview pane shows images of the same quality as the draft rendering mode :)

I’ve completely forgotten about the batch rendering. Actually, I’ve already added it back into the internal version, it works a bit faster than in 3.1.

By the way, the numbers you listed for 3.2 (40 minutes of rendering) are too high for me. I’ve got about 4 minutes here for print/web and 1:13 for draft on 3.1 and 0:43 for draft on 3.2. How did you get 40 minutes? The only idea is that you used blurred reflection that is yet too slow, I am going to fix this as well.

Hi, is it possible to give thickness to the business cards ? real cards are like 1 mm thick, and on your sample images they seem flat.

Yes, there was blurred reflection

what are the main differences between web and print setup?

Vlad, I’ve already replied you by e-mail.

Wojtek, “web” mode is similar to light cache in VRay. It gives a bit lower quality, but usually renders faster. It is still experimental, so issues are possible.

Would be cool to be able to adjust the opening of a book?

One more book type request… There is a format known as Trade Paperback with Flaps, basically a soft hard back (no boards).

Are these things that could be added easily?

Love the new shading… however a bit of an issue.

Rotation parameters do not operate as expected. That is, they do not manipulate based on consistent rotation origins.

For example, it is not possible to lean the ipad model back 40 degrees with respect to the floor while it is in landscape orientation.
