Some news regarding the next release

December 28th, 2010

It seems that the year is over, while the next version is not yet ready. Here’s why:

The multiple shapes features requires significantly faster rendering to be useful. Both in preview and production Box Shot 3D has to render faster. That was the main goal of the past few months. While improving the speed I’ve come to the changing of the lighting scheme. Personally I like the new lighting more, see the difference below (click for larger images):

The new lighting scheme produces brighter images and better ambient shadows. However, this beauty is not free and requires some additional CPU power, so the the next task I am working on is the speed improvement. This requires a lot of time, so the release is delayed (a bit).

Besides that, the new version brings better edges anti-aliasing (compare the images above), faster background rendering and (finally) the resizable main window. I believe it is worth waiting a bit more :)

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, All The Best and… stay tuned :)

P.S.: Sometimes I post short news in twitter, so feel free to follow.

It sounds very exciting, as always, and I’m delighted to see the resizeable main window will be added. I’ll be checking in often for more news!

That sounds good once again!
I thought you did not want to come with a resizable main window? I had to get used to it, but now I like the small screen very well!
Do you come up with new shapes too?

Any chance you will be putting out a beta version for us guys to try soon?

Great! You really know how to make us longing for the next release.
Keep up the great work. The new lighting seems a promising improvement.

Hey Vitaly, this looks really awesome. Well done. I don’t suppose you’ve had any chance to evaluate the shape I mentioned earlier?! I am sure new shapes are not on your priority list with all that work, but I’ve been asking you about the on-the-floor open dust jacket book with visible (adjustable and customisable) flaps. Art Lebedev have really good examples here: http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/izdal/objects-of-desire/

and here: http://img.artlebedev.com/everything/izdal/objects-of-desire/forty-page52.jpg

I know you’re under pressure, but do you think there is a chance? The dust jacket template is superb! Sorry for the trouble. James

The next release will hardly bring new shapes, just the rendering features. Perhaps, there will be a beta-version to gather some feedback.

As for the book shape, I’ll add it in the near future by enhancing the “Book on the floor” shape. But not in the next release.

Hi Vitaly,

nice to see how you’re improving your software and try to satisfy the crowd. If you need some beta testers, I want to help you!

Hi Vitaly,

I think BoxShot is great! It’s easy to manipulate existing shapes to output a variety of objects. I use the Image shape to create envelopes, but the flap has to be closed. An Envelope shape with an adjustable flap would be a welcomed. Below are the most common envelope designs I generate. Thanks for your consideration. -Beau

#10 Regular Envelopes
#10 Square Flap Envelopes
#10 Window Envelopes
#9 Regular Envelopes
#9 Square Flap Envelopes
#9 Window Envelopes
6 x 9 Open End Envelopes
6 x 9 Booklet Envelopes
9 x 12 Open End Envelopes
9 x 12 Booklet Envelopes
9 x 12 OE Window Envelopes
10 x 13 Booklet Envelopes
10 x 13 Open End Envelopes
A1 Envelopes
A2 Envelopes
A6 Envelopes
A7 Envelopes
A9 Envelopes

Hi Vitaly,
I’m looking to render a wire binder open to spread pages. Is this possible? I cannot locate any parameters for this.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Would it be possible to have parameters to control the rounded corners in Books on the next release? Right now there is no control for that on books. Great software, keep up the good work.
