Box Shot 3D 3.1

November 2nd, 2010

Well, here it finally is! Significantly changed under the hood, with some new shapes and improved old ones. Now the details:

First of all, this version doesn’t support Mac OS X Tiger. As the Lion has been already announced and as Apple deprecated the development tools for Tiger, I decided to stop the support of it. The last version that supports Tiger was 3.0.4 and you can get it in the “Download” section. Please upgrade your Macs.

Now the new shapes. Here they are:

Monitor, iPhone and iPad. See the user manual for default resolutions. And do not forget to turn the specular lighting on to see the glossy surface.

Besides that, version 3.1 features a hard cover book with flat spine and multi-folds vertical booklet. Both have been already shown. Mac version now loads CMYK and grayscale images much faster and looks a bit better because of the redesigned main window. Transformation page allows to change the scale of the shape (useful for external 3DS files adjustment). Images and Booklets have got Width and Height sliders, so you can adjust them manually if needed.

Finally, starting from version 3.1 Box Shot 3D checks for updates automatically, so you’ll get know about the new versions almost immediately. Of course, this option can be turned off if necessary.

Now grab the latest version and try all the new features. Feedback is welcome as always!

Exellent job Vitaly, well done;)

A vimeo page with afew vids done with camtasia wouldnt go a miss..anyone?
And a community library of 3ds files and examples of best eye candy using boxshot3d.

eg. A tutorial on specular mapping,
so everyone can see how to use it properly.

Export Alpha channel or layered Tif file.
Import more variety of files.
HDRI Environments/ backplates.

and have some of these features maybe:)

Another idea for a future BOxshot 3D
is a access to ya fonts so you can type a word out in boxshot.. and has all normal type features like kerning and stuff.

You have Apple products now..
Why not add a Dunny or some Nike air max sneakers to customize in 3d.
branded objects in the software.. interesting.

Thanks to all.

Loz, what is Dunny? I also wonder why someone needs to customize Nike sneakers, except perhaps Nike :)

I like the new shapes in the latest version so much, I think I may not be the first to ask for a laptop shape be added next. I think it will be added, and possibly a TV set?

Hello, Vitaly.
About a year ago you mentioned CUDA and OpenCL as “maybe this will be added in the near future”. Is there any news about it? :)

I really like this release – having played around finally with some of the lighting and blurring modes some really fantastic photorealism can be achieved.

I remember people asking for a gradient backdrop option… this is really the only aspect of the results of this program that give away the artifice. For me, the key to it is that the floor responds as if it was completely glossy and fully lit. That is, light doesn’t naturally fall away on the plane as it slopes away from the camera.

For many applications, this is perfect – e.g. you have a backdrop or a scene you want to place the item in – but when you have the object on its own with no image backdrop, you have all of this realistic light casting and shadow on a plane that is consistently 100% bright.

Also, if you are taking requests for models, I would personally love to see a gallery frame model introduced with parameters for:

Frame thickness
Frame depth
Frame texture (tiled)
Single or Double Matte
For each matte: board color and core color (white or black)
For matte: top bottom left right matting

Thanks for putting together such a great product!

Some artists customise sneakers all the time..
and Dunnys too. I mentioned those examples as they are cool brands too Nike & Kidrobot that is. And seeing as you chose to have Apple products in your software, why not go the full hog.. slight sarcasm on my part.

WHat is a dunny you say?

What was your thoughts on one day having:
Import more variety of files?
HDRI Environments/ backplates?
Save as layer Tif/psd?

Hi Vitalij,

please be carefull with adding new shapes — as soon as the control options are to complicated to implement and the images need to be of a specific size, the software will become to bloated and complicated or at least hard to understand for some users.

For special shapes, In my opinion a better solution would be to offer a library of shapes for download (some free, some paid) directly on your page and a (definitely paid) option to order personalized shapes either from you directly or from a friendly 3d-modeler you might cooperate with.

Every download could come with a short description of the image specifics needed and would work within the already existend import function of BoxShot. :-)

Cheers, Jens

I’d like to see a newspaper tabloid shape added, such as the one pictured here: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FeYMybhhrAY/TOWmzbW0xHI/AAAAAAAAAMs/5CIefKUyics/s1600/f.jpg

Thanks God. I’ve finally got the software bought for me. I receive the code in my email and now I should start enjoying software of the year.

Thanks Vitally for this wonderful software. A fan from Nigeria

Hi Vitaly, great job with this version, I am using it a lot, although I have been cheating with Faceout3D and Cover Actions Premium – ‘horses for causes’ as they say. I really like the new ideas, I am not sure if adding more shapes is necessary. As I said before, people can fiddle with external 3ds files – you’ve done a brilliant job allowing that to happen and you cannot cater to everybody – Turbosquid has plenty of 3ds options, so do Dosch. That said I like the newspaper idea, a stapled magazine/brochure is also worth investigating. How about that hardback (dust jacked) with flaps – on the floor? Anyway, everything works great and I am using Boxshot 3D more and more. Cheers. James

I’ll definitely go with Jens’ comment… but not just because of the complications added to the end user… but also because you are now dealing with BRANDS… and you are making money out of them (sort of)… So those shapes should DEFINITELY be a free add-on to the software.

Watch out! I’ll hate to see the maker of this great piece of software having headaches because of nonesenses like these.

I’m seconding James Smith’s comment above…I’d love an interior layout like that!

I just downloaded the new version and love the new shapes! It would be nice to see a horizontal version of the iPad and iPhone, though, since those can be used in portrait or landscape mode.

For example, we primarily design iPad UIs to be used horizontally.

Thanks. Keep up the great work!

David, use the “Rotate X/Y/Z” sliders on the “Transformation” section (it is on the “Shapes” page). You can turn any shape horizontally or put it to the floor.

The feature was introduced in version 2.11: http://www.boxshot3d.com/20090215/new-images-from-211/

Any possibility of adding flash or quicktime full rotation video format?

david, no. Box Shot 3D can be controlled via command line and the user manual contains a chapter about the rendering of spinning objects. You can render a series of images and then combine them to a movie.

Does this work on OSX 10.5.8 Leopard?
Hope so!
