The Roadmap

June 27th, 2010

While working on the next version I decided to release it as a major upgrade. New shapes and 64-bits support look enough to name the upcoming release “3.0″. Below I describe my vision of the third version of Box Shot 3D and answer to some possible questions.

A long-awaited paid upgrade

First of all, the most important feature of the third version that I’ve promised is “multiple shapes”. It will not be added in version 3.0, but I’ll definitely add it in 3.XX series, so don’t worry about that too much. I am yet to speed up the rendering engine to allow editing of multiple shapes. This will take some time, but I hope to finish it by the end of this year.

The second thing is supported platforms. The third version of Box Shot 3D will natively support both 32 and 64 bit Mac and Windows. As OS X Tiger doesn’t support 64 bits, and according to the site statistics Tiger is used by approximately 5% of visitors, I don’t think that Tiger-version will survive for a really long time. However, I’ll do my best to release Tiger versions as long as possible. Tiger version will be available for downloading as a separate link. If you still use Tiger, please upgrade it :)

Now, the price. All the previous upgrades were free. This one is not, at least for those, who purchased a license before 2010. Everyone, who purchased Box Shot 3D in 2010 will get version 3.0 for free. All the rest will get a 50% discount. I have no mind to change the price right now, but it will be definitely changed after releasing the “multiple shapes” feature.

For those, who aren’t going to upgrade at all, the latest 2.XX version will be available in the download section. I will not add new features there, but all the found bugs will be fixed.

Questions?

P.S.: Yes, the bucks are rendered in Box Shot 3D :)

Will all 3.XX upgrades be free, even though the price of the program goes up after the multiple shapes feature is added?

Paul, sure. All minor upgrades are free and the multiple shapes feature will be added as a part of minor upgrade.

Thanks for all your efforts Vitaly. I would like to know what the coming version “multiple shapes” will contain in terms of shape. I like the bucks. I’ve not bought the software but I can tell you that I still enjoy the trial version with all the black lines embedded on every image. I will definitely make a purchase before the 2010 runs out so that I can benefit from the free upgrade. Thanks so much once again. This is coming from Nigeria

Hello Vitaly, I just bought your software but I didn’t get the 3.0 version…

However, far more critical is this: HOW do I get my own image into boxshot??

The software only allows me to open .box3d project files, so how do I transform my gif, jpg, tiff, or whatever images into your project file type??

One other point is: When I change the width and height to that of my image (160*225), the resizing makes half of the image disappear. – The “help” file says “To zoom out, click the minus at the bottom left corner” – which minus, there’s none…?

Please can you respond urgently because I bought it to get a project finished? – Thanks.
David

Vitaly, meanwhile I understood how to get my own image in there (images! ;-)
but the zoom minus/plus is still not anywhere, the sizing problem remains too…?

Hey Vitaly
That’s great news. Do you think you will have the open dust jacket view added in this release? Also, do you know roughly when will you be launching the new version?

@David: on the Images section goto Crop – then just drag the boarders to the size you want

@David or try the button “Fit shape to image”

Hey thanks Pebowski! :-)

Oh, and I’d like to add for other visitors:
Just done my first ebook 3D image, and Vitaly’s software is simply awesome!!! Easy to use, powerful, and the results after rendering are far more “life-like” than photoshop images!!

So, thanks Vitaly for making the BEST software most reasonably priced! :-)

Loz, yep :)

David, it seems that we’ve figured this out by e-mail.

James Smith, I’m not sure about dust jackets in this release. Perhaps a bit later. As for the date, I hope to finish it in August.

With multiple shapes you mean rendering like 3 boxes in ‘one image’ ?

Please don’t forget to include the shape: Desktop Calendar on the version 3 of Box Shot 3D!!!! ^^

Please Vital, do not forget to include “custom” in the resolution rendering. Give the freedom instead of the usual “4000×4000″ max. Let user defines what they want instead of fixed size. Thanks

Rogier, yes.

hanibal, a bit later, sorry.

IMAM A.B, you can use custom sizes right now, just put your own numbers to width and height fields. If you need higher resolutions – I am deciding about this.

Thanks for the reply. Will be happy to buy before the year runs out so that I can benefit from the upgrade to 3.0.

Again Vitaly, could you please include packaging shapes like “Ice Cream cup, bottle, paperpack, etc.” I’ll be so much happy if you could consider these in the next version 3.0

Thanks always.

I usually add some shapes in every release and still have lot of them in the TODO list. If you want new shapes – please send some images to support e-mail, I’ll put them to the queue.

Add me to the “happy campers” list! I just paid for activation of my mac version and was delighted to see that I will receive version 3 at no extra cost.
Thank you guys for the best application available!
PS: Any planning toward video rendering?

JP, Box Shot 3D was never designed as a “video” renderer. It renders still images. However, as it allows scripting, it is not a big problem to render a sequence of frames with rotating shape.

The upcoming third version of Box Shot 3D has a chapter about this in the User Manual.
