Go 64 Bits

May 23rd, 2010

Both Windows and Mac versions of Box Shot 3D were 32-bit from the first days. Even on 64-bit platforms they still run as 32-bit applications. There is no speed difference between running 32-bit code on 64 or 32-bit platform, so I didn’t care about that. Until the last days.

While working on version 2.14, I’ve decided to build a 64-bit version of Box Shot 3D to compare the performance. The results were outstanding, 64-bit versions run 25-30% faster than 32-bit versions on the same hardware!

So, starting from 2.14 Box Shot 3D will support both 32- and 64-bit platforms. This means that everyone who runs Windows 64 or Snow Leopard will see a quite big difference in rendering time.

Another side of the coin is that I have to build a separate version for Mac OS X Tiger, as it doesn’t support 64-bits. According to the site logs, people still use Tiger and run Box Shot 3D on it, so I have to support it. Perhaps, the rendering speedup will encourage them to upgrade :)

Great news :)
So there will be two different distributives or you’ll use one installer for both?

I can’t wait for this version. 64-bit really makes a difference.

Draugmot, Windows version will be available as a single installer. Mac OS X Tiger version will have its own download link.

Michael Carpenter, yeah… It is really faster :)

Great choice!
I am looking forward of testing the 64-bit beauty!
Thanks in advance,

Oh, I so look forward to that 64-bit version for Snow Leopard!

Faster rendering speeds sound just excellent – at the moment I set an image to render and let it go for a few hours (always need big, hi-res images).

I’m hopeful, Vitaly, that I might shave off a third of that time.

Thanks so much for your fabulous development skills and support, mate.

That is great news! I am running a machine with 12 GB of RAM and Win 7 / 64 bits. I just got is especially for Photoshop, and it makes a huge difference. So great that BoxShot3D will support it!

Does BoxShot have any 64bit improvement on “simple” Leopard 10.5.8 ?

I have graphic problem in 2.13.3. In 2.9.4 (2109) all look nice! WTF?

Adam, as I can’t find your name in the database of registered users, it looks like the fake serial number you use has been finally blocked :)

Now you’d better either to roll back to 2.9.4 or to purchase a real license. Personally, I vote for the second option.

This is certainly wonderful news. With our rendering experience over the past 3 years of rendering in 32 vs 64 bit, in EVERY case (if the software being used was built to utilize 64 bit if present) we enjoyed far more than a 20-30% increase in speed. For instance, my wife using Poser, rendered a project that would have taken no less than 4 days (no kidding) accomplished the same output in just under 7.5 hours! She also produces a tremendous amount of video rendering for various artists we support. She recently upgraded to the 64 bit version of Vegas Pro Studio and her render time is now less than one third of the original processing time. Completely amazing and absolutely welcome on every level.

So, with all that said, depending on how you write your code, to not only detect and utilize the availability of 64 bit, but the potential detection and utilization of multi-core processors, you are sure to have icing on the cake of your already completely awesome program.

We have been utilizing BoxShot3D for quite a while now, and even though we are both rather proficient in the graphical arts department, the tools you have incorporated within your product have saved us LITERALLY hundreds (if not thousands) of hours in development and processing time. Our team simply cannot thank you enough for your efforts in the development of this product and we will be in eager anticipation of any future developments that you might unleash upon the world.

You have our attention and appreciation in ways that are probably difficult to imagine. In every way that matters, you are no less a wizard for the visual magic that you seemingly effortlessly empower us with and – without limitation – we thank you for your desire and attention to detail. We hope to never lose you and what you obviously have to offer.

Sincerely and without hesitation,
