Box Shot 3D 2.13.1

November 24th, 2009

This is a bugfix release, update is highly recommended.

As I promised yesterday, here is the fix for everything that you have found in 2.13:

  • Opening boxes now appear in Mac version
  • CD near the box doesn’t move when you open it
  • Soft cover book with round corners can be put on the top of stack

Well, I believe that it finally works fine. Feel free to grab and use :)

Downloaded the latest version…

Is there any help files about Bump and Specular and how they are to be used. I know a little about the bump,

Have no clue about materials and what will
created at http://www.twitpic.com/qotwd .
Is this something you have to import?? and use bump? need a faq or something..

Regarding the open boxes, is there a way to put something in the box? I see with that you can put an image.but it goes on the walls of the box.. I was thinking about the way the cd/dvd moves around we could use that and change the cd image to be any image and have it be moveable inside the box..
If that isn’t possible. how about an image for just the bottom section of the box and not the walls.
I GUESS IM ASKING FOR WAY TO MUCH…

Boxes on on some on the MAC version look to give it a nice test the next couple of days..

Sean
Great job!

Sean, there’s a chapter in the user manual both in Mac and Windows versions of Box Shot 3D. It’s small, but gives enough information to start your own experiments.

As I know a lot about that stuff, maybe it is hard for me to write good guide for beginners, so feel free to ask questions here and maybe we’ll create a good guide together. What do you think?

Sean: I’m an absolute ignorant of graphic things and I’m amused on what I can create with this software.

Allow me to tell you what I did in order to get that result:
1) I made the cover with the leyend and the stamp image on it. Almost black background (not 100% black). I export it as Cover.png.
2) I download a leather texture from CGTextures.com. I think I downloaded the texture number 15230
3) I opened that texture file within Corel Photo Paint and “split it” into CMYK channels (just a couple clicks in the menu)
It creates 4 separate versions of the original file. I picked the one with a good balance of whites and blacks (more whites than blacks). It’s your call which one to choose.
4) Next step: I duplicate the image I made in step 1 and deleted the black background. I selected all remaining objets (leyend and stamp) and changed its brightness so they looked very dark.
Just make sure you do not move any object! Just make them darker.
5) I used the modified texture as the background of this new file (the one I created in step 4) and exported it as CoverBump.png
6) Open BS3D, create a new hardcover book, set the front file to Cover.png, and its bump to CoverBump.png, set other settings at your please and voilá!

I hope it helps!
All best,
Will

Hi Vitaly,
Thanks for your hardworking to release the new version of Box Shot 3D. Your software is very useful for my works.

But I’m wondering do you have the plan to make the 3D Table Calendar (shape) on next versions?

That should be awesome!

Thank you, again! ^^

This release looks great! Thanks for all your hard work.

I’ve looked at a couple of other programs in recent times just for interest to see how they compare – and they don’t have half the features that Box Shot 3D has. It really is streets ahead of anything else I’ve seen.

I’m busily playing with textures at the moment – being graphically challenged I have a lot to learn. Thanks for this latest release!

Hi Vitaly, thank you, this is great, I like it a lot. My question regarding the creation of a creditcard: I would love to give the card a little thickness, but I can’t do it with an image, even though I would use the “Software Box” I can’t have round corners… I know I can fix this with photoshop, but would be nice if it would be built into it…

this soft is greater with every version :)
I recommend it anytime i can.
Some things you might consider in new wersions:
-possibility to make a render with several objects (1 box, 2 folders and 1 cd for example). As for now i’m doing all the renders separate on a transparent background, and assemble it in photoshop.
-would it be possible to have a second “preview” render in direct3d/opengl, to choose it if you want faster previews? raytracing in preview, even on a i7 is slow:) and mayby add a “preview” button that renders it in the way it’s done now.
-as for new objects:
a standard glass bottle (but without the glass texture, it will calculate the raytrace too slowly). Could the glass be done with a transparent texture with some specular map?.

the software is perfect as now, and it’s becoming even better with every new version :)
congratulations and great work.

Hanibal, do you need something like this: http://kile.stravaganza.org/images/blog/table_calendar09.jpg ?

mauko, I have some requests for credit and business cards, need to summarize them and implement in the next version.

Raphael, multiple shapes and hardware accelerated preview are scheduled for the next major releases. Unfortunately, I can’t say a date or promise something. Still too much to do there.

As regards to glass, it will require environment reflection maps at first. This is useful feature for metal or glass surfaces (cans, spirals, CDs etc), so maybe I’ll add it soon. The second required feature is refraction. You will not believe that it is a glass if it will not refract light and add caustics. That’s not easy and as it is rarely used, I don’t think that this will be added soon.

Hej Vitaly,

Thank you for working on the Software. I use this little great thing nearly every day.

One question i have: Is it possible to use the Image transparency also on external files, i could not find out jet how it works.

Thank you!
Péter

Hi!

2.13′s improvements are great. Maybe, tiling and scaling for bump maps can be added later?

hi!
can you make the stacks standing like this picture:

?

Péter, yes, it is possible. Please contact me using e-mail to discuss this.

draugmot, not right now. Maybe later.

menashe, select a stack shape. Then switch to the Transformation panel and enter -90 to the first “Rotation” field. You may want to enter 20 or more to the second “Offset” field as well.

Dear Vitaly,

so many thanks for the new version – dust jackets and variable stacks in one step, that’s amazing! For me as a real-printed-book publisher that both are the most useful features.

So I am perfectly happy with the rendering features and the options. Today I have some ideas for the usability, perhaps they would be easy to implement:

- “Save as” command of the *.box3d-file should get a shortcut like “Ctrl+Shift”. I need it very often, that would help to save mouse kilometres.

- “Save as” command should get as default value the name of the already open *.box3d-file, because often the new file names bases on the previous name.

- Save command of the rendered image should get a shortcut and default value as well, just the name of the used and open *.box3d-file, because often the image file names bases or is exactly the name of the *.box3d-file to have consistent file names.

If that could be implemented I really would be thankful!

For one day I wish a sort of a batch processor in a way of selecting the prepared *.box3d-files one by one and say “Go” and it runs over night to render all those files and saves the images as PNG one by one, just by name of the *.box3d-files and the setting from these files.

As we need to render 4000 x 4000 pixels all the time for our large size printed catalogs that would help us a lot because to write a Batch-File by hand is very time consuming.

So many thanks, Vitaly, for all your hard work and improvements over the last releases!

Oliver

Dear Vitaly,

I found a bug in 2.13.1. It always loses the path to the images when saving and closing and re-opening the *.box3d-file! Is there a chance to fix this issue quickly?

System: Win Vista, previous version worked fine on the same PC, but was overwritten with the update.

All the best
Oliver

“Vitaly: Hanibal, do you need something like this: http://kile.stravaganza.org/images/blog/table_calendar09.jpg ?”

Oh, yeah! That’s it! :D
I love your software very much! And I hope you will add some more shapes like Table Calendar, Chinese Moon Cake Box (which have special ways to open, exp. my work: http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/6366/3dfullopen.jpg ^^)…

Thank you in advances! ^^

I wonder why with the new books there is no option for an opened hardcover. Is there a special reason for this or have I overseen something (I know it works with old books, but there you can’t change the size)

21. Vitaly [Box Shot 3D]  [+]

Pebowski, this shape can be found at the very bottom of the shapes list. Select the “Fixed Books And Stacks” item and you will see both it and old fixed stacks.

Vitaly, I know, but as I said in my post that there you can’t change height and width of the book. Right? Best regards from Vienna

I just found a little bug: when the images had special characters like the German ß and you save your work and then load it again, the image name is lost, because the ß is translated to other characters, so that the rig´ht image can not be found anymore.

Pebowski, opened hard-cover book is a complex shape and it is a problem to change it’s dimensions properly on-the-fly. That’s why it doesn’t have such options.

And thanks for the bugreport, I’ve put it to my list.

the render doesnt work- in xp and in win7 you dont see even the options of the Shapes- also it doesnt rendering at all.

ANOTHER ONE- in windows 7 you cannot see the true resolution like you see in WinXP. in Shapes Tab of course.

rami, according to the screenshot that you have sent to support, you’d better to purchase a real serial number instead of using stolen and blocked one :)

Rami, you use a pirated version of Box Shot 3D and you want support? And then you bring up a competitor’s product? You obviously have no integrity.

How to I obtain the manual for the Mac version?

34. Vitaly [Box Shot 3D]  [+]

Clint, there is a short manual under the “Help” menu. If you have more questions, feel free to contact me by e-mail, I’ll try to help.

Actually, Box Shot 3D is a quite easy product, so find five minutes to play with it and the most of your questions will disappear :)
