Well, OK, Dust Jackets…

November 3rd, 2009

Here’s what I have so far:

Jackets will be added as a new subtype of books: “Hard cover book with jacket”. I can’t remember soft cover book with jacket (they sometimes have flaps that look like jackets though), and as I merged soft and hard cover books in single “Book” shape, I will just add book with jacket as a yet another subtype. This book will be available both in stacks and alone.

As it is still under a heavy development, I want to discuss some details of implementation. First of all, is it what you all wanted? :)

Now the questions:
Should I split jackets to front/side/back/flap parts or they will be loaded as single images?

What size of flaps is the best? May I use a half of width of front or back sides? I don’t want to add a slider just to adjust their width, so maybe some fixed width will work?

And what about back side of jackets? Should I paint it using the same, but flipped, image or should I leave it white? I want to add transparency option to jacket, so you will be able to make holes in it. The easiest way to do it is to use the same image, as on the front side.

Let’s discuss this :)

Great!

I think their width should be around one third.

Also, both flaps should have separate images (say, one for talk about the bok and one to talk about the author).

However, if it this feature is going to delay the release of the v x.13 I would suggest to leave it to a further version.

I’m eager to use the already-coded features of the x.13!!!

Will, each flap will have its own image of course. The question is how to assign them. I don’t think that anyone will be happy to assign 5 images for jacket. But it will be not easy to find out size of book without sizes of images for front and spine. Or without size of front and left parts of jacket.

That’s the question…

Back side –

draugmot, thanks for comments, but please use English here or send comments to e-mail.
most of the readers can’t read Russian

Yes, you will be able to make height of jacket smaller than the book by using transparent images. Exactly as holes. You even will be able to do something like those paper dolls :)

I’d like you to split jackets to front/side/back/flap parts, but any way will be suitable. We couldn’t have all the options you mentioned, could we? That’d be best. How difficult would that be for you? I hope you can add the transparency option to the cover, too. Thanks again for all your continuing work on this. Even if I didn’t already own Box Shot 3D, I’d still be a fan of your work!

This will be an incredibly useful feature! Thanks for adding it. All of the templates I receive from printers/manufacturers have a flap width of 3.5 inches. Whether the overall trim is large or small, this flap width is consistent. I personally would prefer to wrap a single image that has the front/back covers, spine and flaps combined. That’s how I set them up. However, if that presents a problem fitting the jacket to your book form, then I can cut it into pieces. The back side of a printed dust jacket is always white. For what it’s worth, we produce designs for covers that can have embossing, foil stamping, die cuts and matte/gloss varnishes.

Great feature, Vitaly! For what it’s worth, we design jackets as ‘all to view’ on one page, just the way they are printed. So, a single image for the back flap, back, spine, front and front flap would be all that’s required (IMHO).

Flap width set to around one third, as Will suggested, would be excellent.

Adding transparency is a fun idea, but I can’t recall the last time we cut a hole in any of our jackets. Still, if it’s easy to do for you, I’m all for it.

Hi Vitaly,

Generally I use 100mm flaps on larger books (royal 240mm x 158mm and demi 222mm x 138mm). Books larger than these would generally be a bit bigger, around 120mm-130mm.

Smaller books I use 70mm-85mm.

All have between 8mm & 10mm turn around.

I’d say that each part needs a separate loading module:
Back flap, Back, Spine, Front, Front flap.

If these are adjustable a great especially the flaps (which I guess will be the only variable compared to the size of the book, the Back, Spine & Front would be controlled by the books dimensions).

The true strength of your product is how easy it is to control dimensions.

A whole jacket whilst workable would in the end frustrate anyone who needs to make a simple change to a spine say, as they then have to make up the whole jacket image again.

Hope this info is helpful?

Many thanks, for adding this function Vitaly, brilliant!

Excellent! That looks fantastic – I’ve been going on about it ;-) but this result is really cool. From my point of view flaps should have a separate loading function as they can vary substantially from what is on front/back cover – they can be solid colour, different images, etc. Fixed width flaps may look weird. As for the wait Will Castillo – I am sure people are prepared to wait and I am sure people are prepared to pay for this upgrade as well. Vitally is doing a brilliant job and I don’t think that should come as a free upgrade. Once again Well done!

Off topic, on your “CD Box With Disc” (from your Gallery images), is it possible to not have a jewel case insert/sleeve and show the disc inside the closed case?

The more options you have gives you more control. Takes longer maybe but in the end the outcome would be well worth it.

Underside of a jacket is white usually.
Having this new option of an open book in dust jacket, so you can see a pic of the author is a nice lil’ touch.
Anyway what is it with guys and flaps I wanna see some magazines lol;)
Cant wait to see the new magazines as you seem to be on a roll with the new features, great job.

Great! When will it finally be released?

Come on guyz give Vitaly a break – there is so much one can do. There will be more upgrades and new versions – magazines are cool but as I mentioned earlier you can get them as .3ds options from third parties like Turbo Squid so it is not the end of the world. Vitaly you are doing a superb job man! Really great work!!! Whatever you have in mind – just do it and worry about additional features later. Most of the people here are quite excited with the new features so things are cool!

Great work Vitaly!
James you are funny, you been going on about dust jackets for like ages.. lol
Finally you get what you wanted and you are telling others to give him a break.

Personally speaking the a variety of magazine options would be very welcome with many graphic designers I know who work on editorial work have always wished that boxshot had more of them and realistic.
Regarding Turbosquid the decent magazine 3ds objects cost as much as Boxshot, and if our studio started buying 3ds. files I may as well hand the projects over to my 3d department, to make most their studio max skills, and my editorial lot who are a talented bunch would rather use boxshot for personalisation as afew are using coveractionpro and can all look same after a while.

I think the dust jackets look great. But personally, I don’t really need the dust jackets but I do need some of the other features. So, for me, I wouldn’t mind if you left the dust jackets for 2.14.

Rex, it is pointless to engage in such exchanges. There are plenty of sources for 3D magazines out there (opened, closed, saddle stitched, etc) newspaper stacks, magazine stacks – you can easily Google or Bing them. I am not sure what is that you really want? What shapes, options? Perhaps you can make it clear to all of us here? What does “a variety of magazine options” mean? Special folios? Fold-outs, wrap-arounds? It is rather vague. At least my demand was clear ;-)

I think you missed the point James. Do you run a business by the way? ..its ok Im not really interested, I think I already know the answer.

Guys, take it easy, please.

There will be no new magazines in 2.13 because I already delayed it for a few months and it will not be a good idea to delay it more. There are few magazine-related requests in the wishlist and I will implement some of them in the future versions.

Let’s keep sharing good ideas instead of quarrel about small and unimportant things.

Well said Vitaly! Positive vibes people;)
James ya comment sounded a lil’ patronizing, no wonder that Rex dude gave you that response.
I for one can happily wait for extra magazine features..got lots models now thanks to good ol’ rapidshare lol

If anybody can steer me to any magazine files I can use in Box Shot, I’d sure appreciate it. Free ones. Thanks.

So Paul/Rex you are after 3D magazines? I agree with James – there are plenty of 3DS options out there – magazines come in various shapes and forms and one has to be more precise as to what exactly they need. I suppose you can create a really thin paperback book and try the rotating and scaling options to make it look more like a magazine. Rex, I suppose if you are running (owning) a successful business you can afford to splash out on a good quality 3D magazines. It seems to me that everybody here wants something but is not prepared to wait or pay the price and get is somewhere else…

Martin Im fine with waiting and I am more than willing to pay, as it goes i have brought 3d files off turbosquid and sent Vitaly what i had brought to test it out back before summmer. So less of the everybody here is a cheapskate talk. And yes im a premium member of rapidshare which i pay for too. I buy boxhsot so i can have the updates.
The point that guy was making before was that he is running a business and time is money, and i guess he dosent want his staff on google when they should be working;)
Martin James or James or Martin u decide dude ..i got your number.
Less of the personal questions and offer some help or information. Paul requested free 3ds objects that he can use in the Boxshot that he brought so be nice.

Yes, I can and have made really thin softcover books in Box Shot for use as magazines (and thanks for taking the time to suggest it), but I’d just like to have as many options for their appearances as possible, that’s all. I don’t want to buy them because I don’t really NEED them now, I just want to have them available, just in case.

Hey, I hope you will add 3D Table Calendar on your next Version of Box Shot 3D!

That should be GREAT! ^^

Vitaly, all I can say is that Boxshot3D is without doubt the best software investment I have ever made!

This app is up there with PhotoShop in my humble opinion!

Can’t wait to play with the new features :)
