As I told before, you will be able to use several images for a single side. After receiving thousands of questions (well, actually, nobody asked :) ) I want to show you a bit more.

A Book

Let’s start from the black book with gold letters on it. Like this one:

Looks boring. Remove shadows and you will get exactly the same image as most of other virtual cover applications try to “sell” you. You may want to add some specular lighting:

Well, a bit better. At least we may see some details of shape. But it is still too unnatural, too artificial. OK. Now what you will be able to do in 2.13:

As one fruit company said “See the difference” :) Need some foil or leather – you’re at the right place.

A Card

Yes, this works for other shapes too. What about a member card?

How Does It Work?

You may load a height map image for each side of the shape. It’s a grayscale image, where darker means “lower” and brighter means “higher”. See the height map for the member card as an example:

You may also load a specular map image. Idea is the same: dark parts of specular map will reflect less light than bright ones. This is good for foil pieces on book, box or anything else.

That’s all for now, comments are welcome.

This will be a wonderful addition to BoxShot 3D! This is the kind of follow-up improvements to the software I hoped for when I purchased it. What about rendering times when creating an image for print in high resolution? Now it takes quite a bit of time to render a large image for print. How will adding height map images affect that?

Oh WOW, this App just gets better and better!

Awesome, I can’t wait, this is exactly what I’ve been wanting!

I really don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep now, this is a great asset to an already blindingly brilliant App!!

Scott, rendering time is almost the same as without the effect.

Looks pretty! I probably won’t need it that much, but when I can use it, it surely will make a difference. :)

Absolutely amazing – this is a fantastic leap from the last version. I really can’t wait. Foil blocking, textures yikes – this will make such a difference. Currently I’ve been faking all of that is photoshop – just adding embossing onto a box takes forever – this is great!!!!

oops and just spotted the bit about specular map – I can now do spot laminate effects too???? this is THE perfect tool!

Fantastic! Looks so real. Any screenshots of that hardback book with a wrap-around dust jacket (I’ve been going on about it for a while?

James, I remember about dust jackets. I see them in my dreams while sleeping and know that you need them. Stay tuned :)

Great improvements! That’s one small step for Vitaly, one giant leap for all the BoxShot users. Can’t wait to see BS 2.13 on my Computer!

Nice work Vitaly. Most 3d artists will be used to using materials and will understand the whole specular map and adding depth to surfaces etc but its a welcome addition for the 2d artists too:)
Maybe HDRI maps could be dropped into the background map in later versions of Boxshot.

Lastly I wanted to check you are aware its noticeable that the leather material is in tiles on the surface, if you look closely etc.
Keep it coming and all the best Vitaly;)

Loz, yes it is tiled. It was the first leather height-map that I found in Google :)

Height-map and specular images should have the same size (or at least aspect) as the main image, because Box Shot 3D will apply crop settings to them too. So if you have a small leather texture, you have to wrap it until it fill the whole cover. This should be done in graphics editor, not in Box Shot 3D.

Hiya Vitaly
I knew you would be aware, bit of a perfectionist me thinks;) But hey hats off to you some nice lil’ touches that will make all the difference on a final design.
I like to have a wooden surface background for alot of my boxshot stuff, so having the option to make that wood grain have some bit depth is a bonus for sure.
Looking forward to seeing the new magazine shapes you been working on.
Do you think the new version of Boxshot 3D will be unveiled around Xmas?
All the best4now;O)

Will the new version have any textures of its own or will users need to have supply their own? If any come with it, how many and what will they be?

Looking so forward to this version! The wait is agony!

Paul..I doubt the application will have the materials and textures option as Boxshot 3d is a tool at the end of a day so you will have to have all your own image files ready beforehand.
However could be a nice idea to have a gallery or addition to the Blog where Boxshot users can post and share various textures, be they specular, height maps n all that jazz:)

Good idea, Loz. The application has grown to the point where we users could really benefit from being able to share 3D shapes, textures, and any other files we can use! Maybe if enough of us ask for it…

Vitaly,
Is it likely that 2.13 will be released this month?

James, it is likely that I release a new post today :)
New version will be released in November. I have just a few unchecked items in my list. Stay tuned.

The good side of leaving Vitaly alone for a few months is that when you get back to here you find plenty of new toys to play with!

The bad side is that there is always something “about to be released” that you want NOW

:)

Vitaly, thanks a lot for you continuous support and improvements.

I support the idea of create a sort of community-maintained resource base.

All the best,
Will

I’m getting ready to use this wonderful addition!

I’m not a designer, I’m just a writer wannabe. I would like to create a cover almost like the one shown here: Golden, embossed letters plus three rectangular images below (in fact, three stamps).

Where can I find these “height images”? I google them and found nothing (I looked for leather height image).

Or it is just a big “leather background” that I have to convert to a grey scale image? And then add the three black rectangles where I want the stamps to be?

The bump part is very nice, but there’s no way to tweak the bump anywhere ? Like more or less bump ?

24. Vitaly [Box Shot 3D]  [+]
January 6th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Rogier, yes you have to change height map image to tweak the bump level. This is because of the fact, that several sides may share the same bump image and I will need to share the bump level too, or make copies of the image for each side, that may eat lot of memory.

I’ll think about it and maybe add a slider to control bump level in the future versions. Thanks for suggestion.
