May 11th, 2009

This is a bugfix release both for Mac and Windows platforms. Fixed some 3DS-related problems, batch processing under Windows and few small bugs. Upgrade is highly recommended.

Can I include an AutoUpdate? Or a mailing list to inform us of new versions?

I’ll think about autoupdate and maybe add it in the future versions.

This blog has RSS feed and I always post about new versions, so you may subscribe to it using your favorite reader.

I don´t like the RSS feed is better an autoupdate or a mailing list, you can use GroupMail, is the best

I would like to have the following features. In images, in browse button, when appears the window “Open” to load images would have a preview of the images in thumbnail and the file name latest loaded keep it to the next load in “Name File” in the window “Open”. Yours Faithfully.

Mark, starting from Windows XP you can switch to Thumbnail View in the file opening window. Do you think it will be better to add custom preview instead of this one?

And I am not sure that I understand the second part of your request. Could you describe it in more details?

This software (mac) version is excellent, my only problem is with these cans and bottles.
It may have more to do with me creating the logo to work with the whole wrapping around.

It be nice if there was a default size logo to create for say the soda can, energy drink size, vitamin bottle and maybe a pill bottle. Just a default size then we can tweak from there. I tell you I do web design and I love this piece of software over so many others in my Macbook. Job well done!

Sean, do ctrl+click on Box Shot 3D icon, select “Show Package Content” and navigate to Contents/Resources
Then copy two files: can.png and bottle.png, you may use them as a starting point.

Hi again Box Shot 3D
Would it be possible to divulge a little bit more on that 3D hardback book with a flapped dust jacked wrap-around? It sounds quite exciting that you have something in mind already…would it be available in the next update?

14. Vitaly [Box Shot 3D]  [+]
May 25th, 2009 at 4:07 pm

Martin, they will not appear in the next minor update (2.13) which will add some image and material-related things. But I’ll do my best to add them in 2.14 or 2.15 versions of Box Shot 3D.

Is there an efficient way to minimize amount of white space around rendered 3D images? I have been trying to find solution that I can consistently apply to any project. I am rendering hundreds of 3D images using command line and have no way to check if an image fit inside the canvas. Please respond somebody experienced the same problem

I will be nice if the “Brochure on the floor” allows two images, left and right. In this case, I do not need to combine two portrait images into one landscape image before importing to Box Shot 3D.

23. Vitaly [Box Shot 3D]  [+]
June 11th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Joshua, you may use image of the “single” side too. Just press the “Crop” button and select the whole image to be used for the side.

Box Shot 3D assumes that you use two-pages image and use the half of your image for each side. Crop feature allows to change this.

Hello,
Are there any plans for other formats besides .3ds ?
Maybe a Boxshot3D Pro :)

Does anyone have a good sites for free or pay 3ds files? I found a few but seems like the 3ds models. are not quite as nice as some others formats.
I guess 3ds is a slightly older format..not sure..

Sean

June 14th, 2009 at 10:52 am

Sean, I though about other formats. Actually, there are not so many formats exist. I can add support for OBJ files, but they are almost the same as 3DS (old and rare :) )

Maybe I’ll add support for format that Google SketchUp uses. This will allow to create new objects for free and it should be interesting. The problem is that the format is quite complicated and it will take a while to support it.

Feel free to suggest other ideas.

Sascha, under Windows you can do the same using command line parameters. See the User Manual for details. Mac version will support AppleScript soon, so you will be able to do the same on Mac too.

I don’t think that adding animation to Box Shot 3D right now is a good idea. There are many important features that I’m yet to add before that.

Competition in sight — apparently Coveractionpro 2 is going to be launched on 28 September 2009. http://coveractionpro.com/info/
The website does contain some pretty cool 3D models (magazines, hardback books with wrap-around dust jackets, journals, reports, etc). It remains to be seen how ‘customizable’ these actions would be (as most of them are based on an action script in Photoshop with fixed parameters and values). I do however think that Box Shot 3D should offer similar 3D shapes (I am still pestering for the hardback book with wrap-around jacket) as certain shapes are very much popular and in demand by serious businesses (publishing companies, booksellers, book e-tailers). Are we likely to get the new shapes in the next 2 months?

Martin, I planned several very interesting features to the next version of Box Shot 3D that should be released in August or September. And I think that some dust jackets will be there :)

Cool! That would be great as I am sure you understand you have a great following in the book publishing industry – a lot of my designer friends who work on books and publications find your application very useful. In essence, books are one of the main products people sell and promote on the internet, so having better visuals helps a lot. One additional suggestion if I may – the open book (magazine) on the floor – would it be possible to tweak the depth of it so that we can vary from a very thin book to a very fat book? Thanks!

June 22nd, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Hi Vitaly, One thing that would really set your product apart, would be to be able to add finishes like Foil, Matt Lamination, Spot Varnish & Embossing/Debossing!

This would make Boxshot3D an absolute must have App for any designer!

And I agree with Martin being able to make a very fat book as well as very thin on open books/magazines.

This has been a great way to consistently represent art in a dynamic and creative way. The thing I wish you could do in the program is work with more than just one shape at a time. Right now, you have to render out one object on a transparent background and continually do this until you’ve got several items on transparent backgrounds and merge them all together (it can be difficult to know exactly how you’d like to place objects together without actually seeing in the scene).

If I were able to layout an identity package complete with letterhead, business cards, envelopes all at once in one rendered setting, it would save me loads of time. Do you have any plans to do this?

This will be implemented in the near future. Maybe in this year. I’m doing my best :)

Since I do a lot of print brochures (especially folders with 5 and more pages), I’d really like to know, if there’ll be the oppurtunity in some of the next versions to create brochures with 5 or more pages AND to set the folding marks individually. That would be very great.

Hey BOXShot3d is the best tool out there.
Is it possible to get a model of just one sheet of Paper? Just to produce something like this: http://conversionroom.blogspot.com/2009/07/how-to-convert-clicks-into-profit.html
The arrangement might be done in PS after the rendering.
thanks a lot.
you do a great job!

Sean, I’ll think about coffee-cup. Too much requests to resist :)

Rudolf, you may use “Image” object to make just one sheet of paper you need. To put it flat, use the “Transformation” options.

Hi
I would like to see controls on the DVD box size – i need to create images for CD and DVD boxes which are non-standard size – they look like DVD boxes but are not as high (1/2 height dvd boxes and other special sizes). Having a height adjustment on the DVD would fix that for me i think. Also thickness of DVD box would help for doing slimline covers.

Also having a stack of DVDs/CDs with and without covers too..
thanks
mark

Mark, DVD shape was designed with standards in mind. That’s why it doesn’t have size parameters… I’ll think about your suggestion, because lots of things should be taken into account to resize such boxes correct.

Stacks are the second thing I am yet to implement. But they will take a while.

I LOVE this software, have been using it for more than a year now and the new shapes are excellent. I know you have a long wishlist for more shapes and functions and it would be great to have these at some point:

- dustjacket with flaps on hardcover book
- iPhone
- laptop, netbook and LCD TV
- e-reader (like Sony, Kindle)
- possibility to add thickness to images (because they curve, which you can’t do with the book or box images)

:-D

Ann, thank you. Some of your items will be added in the next version of Box Shot 3D. Others will be put to a wish-list (yes, it is long :) )

For shapes like notebook or LCD TV, I suggest you to try the new “3DS Import” feature. There are many types of such objects and sometimes it is better to find or make 3DS file with the object you need.

I just love this software. But i still have very difficult problems with render engine with 2.12 version. If you want a as high image output format its hanging up software. Try render this:
4000x4000px in high end render mode. Its take >8 h to render when software crash! I cant use this and i need it as high quality i can. But i don’t have wait 12 h for rendering. Other software do it for max. 1-2h. Why its so hard to do a good and fast render engine.? Look at studio max version. Extremly fast with custom size rendering. version 2.12 its max 4000x4000px.

Best regards from sweden.
