Box Shot 3D 2.12

May 5th, 2009

Well, here it is. The most important feature is (as I told before) ability to load 3DS files. Now you may render shapes that is missed in Box Shot 3D. 3DS is closed format and has some tricks, so feel free to send me files that have problems with loading.

The second important thing is rendering speedup. I rewrote a lot of code and now some shapes can be rendered twice faster! For example rendering time for slightly opened DVD box at 640×480 was reduced from 4:10 to 2:25 on my PC. Almost twice faster!

There are some new shapes, as always. I already wrote about bottles and cans, one more new shape is Blue-Ray DVD box.

Image shape was improved a bit: back side was separated and now has it’s own image. Curve slider now works in both directions.

As always feel free to find bugs, send suggestions, share ideas and spread the word :)

Very nice! I did notice you have many different bottle examples in your blog post but in 2.12 I only see doing the pill bottle and a soda can. How did you do the energy drink can and the others? Thanks.

Ken, there is a “Type” combo-box both in cans and in bottles settings pages.

Thanks. Sheesh, I’ve got to get some rest. I completely missed that. Very good product, I’m glad I found it. You’ve made my work significantly easier for me. Thanks again.

I have searched the web for free test samples of 3DS files and found a few. One of them, a cup, won’t load into Boxshot 3D without crashing it. Is that an issue you should be notified about or is it likely a poorly created 3DS? Thanks. The newest upgrade is fantastic, as I knew it would be!

Paul, yes, that’s what I told about. Just send it to me and I’ll try to fix it.

I tested Box Shot 3D on many files and it works fine with them, but some problems are possible.

PROPOSAL
Hi Box Shot 3D! The new shapes look fantastic and very useful. Well done! It’s not that I want to spoil the party, but here is a thought – something to better the book shapes and make them more realistic. Many hardcover books have, what in trade is called ‘dust jackets’ which actually wrap around a cased book (cased in cloth, or something else. Would it be possible to have such a new update or a feature? At the moment the hard cover book is a book with hard covers. The dust jacket will make the shape look absolutely superb and original. It is important that the flaps that go around the edges of the covers and fold over are also visible (so there is a hint about it). Just a thought! Hope you will find this useful.

Either way this software gets better and better.Love it!

Martin, thanks for suggestion. I already have dust jacket in the TODO-list, it just waits for its time.

Sean, “high” can shape is good for energy drinks. Default texture from soda can increased it’s diameter, but if you try to set Size parameter to, for example, 45 – you will see typical energy drink can :)

There are quite a selection out there of 3DS images for free. Nice

Here is another nice site.

Nice upgrade. But it still isn’t possible to produce an open Software box. You should add this feature – with possibility to choose the extent of the opening. (it’s only possible to add a CD on the software box)

Sean, thanks for ideas and links.

Eduardo, feel free to send links to the images you want to make with Box Shot 3D. This really helps.

Steve, opened box is in the TODO-list and just waits for its time. Right now you may try to find or create 3DS file for that box and import it in Box Shot 3D.

Eduardo, yellow shape can be done in Box Shot 3D by using closed soft cover book without a problem.

Green shape looks unnatural, especially the bottom right corner. How is it possible in the real life? :)

Red shape will be possible soon. I’ll add multiple shapes in the near future (this or next year).

Not wishing to put unnecessary pressure, but do you think the dust jacket will be included in the next major upgrade?

Cool cool!

Could you perhaps add a shape like a A4-letter so we can use it for mocking up a complete stationary?

Thanks!

/H

Henriko, you may use “Image” object, just put an A4-sized image to it. You may use “Transformation” page to put it on the table.

When I push the “Start Render” button,
a window named “Rendering Virtual Cover” is poped up, but nothing happen. No rendering process at all.
I am running the program with Core-Quad machine with 4GB internal memory, NVirdia 8800 Graphic Card.
How long does it take to render the book cover?

Scifi, as I can’t find your e-mail in the database of registered users, I suggest you to open registration window and clean everything you entered there. Box Shot 3D will ask to restart itself and after that it will be switched to the demo-mode.

It’s a fantastic application. But I’m having problem. Upgrading from version 2.5 to 2.11 has been a pain. It will accept my key but the application will open in a way that I’ll not even able to see the image loaded. Like a kinda burnt image. But anytime I make it a trial version, everything will work fine. Could somebody please let me know what could be the problem? Thanks for your support and help.

Bolajiwds, exactly as in #24, I can’t find your e-mail in the database. So, I suggest you to purchase a real serial number and do not use the pirated one.

If you are legal customer, please contact me via support form and provide the order details, so I will be able to help you.

Is there an efficient way to minimize amount of white space around rendered 3D images? I have been trying to find solution that I can consistently apply to any project. I am rendering hundreds of 3D images using command line and have no way to check if an image fit inside the canvas. Please respond somebody experienced the same problem

“Is there an efficient way to minimize amount of white space around rendered 3D images?”

I have the same problem. Is there a fix for this? I just bought the software a couple of weeks ago and this is my only problem.

Marek and Tanisha – there is no way to do this automatically. While editing Box Shot 3D shows a semi-transparent frame to let you know what will be finally rendered. So when you prepare the scene, you may see how much space will be around the object.

If you need a button or command that will adjust camera distance automatically, I can think about it and maybe add one in the future versions, but I am not sure that it will work well for all scenes. Need to make some tests.

This is creating a huge problem for me. I have all this white space around the images and it doesn’t line up right on my web page. It’s taking up too much space. I have to send the images to my graphic designer so she can load them on photoshop and delete the white space and then send them back to me. I’m still not sure it will work.

I think you should fix this asap. If I had known about this problem, I would’ve shopped around for something else.

Tanisha, this question may be stupid a bit, but did you try the “Distance” slider on the “Camera” page? Maybe it is what you want?

If it isn’t – please send me your project and images by e-mail with the resulting image that you need. I will help.
