Box Shot 3D On Linux

February 22nd, 2009

I just received some screnshots from Erwin Drent who runs Box Shot 3D on Linux using WineHQ. Looks like it works fine.

What next: iPhone? X-Box? :)

It would be really nice to have a native Linux version. Would it really be that difficult if a Mac version exists?

Neville, the kernel of Box Shot 3D is fully cross-platform and may run under Linux without a problem. The problem is, of course, in the GUI.

Linux has lots of user interface frameworks like Gnome or KDE that are not compatible between each other. I may spend some time to add support for KDE, but no doubt that someone will ask Gnome-version. And this may become endless because of dependencies and new releases of system libraries :)

So, it is much better to run it under Wine while it works under it. I’d better add some new graphic features that will be useful on all platforms.

I am very glad to see that this runs on WINE!

I would like to run this in a cluster, so is it multi-threaded?

Pablo, Box Shot 3D uses all available CPU cores for rendering. I can’t tell you anything about running on cluster as I have no idea how you want to do that.

Regarding your user interface framework comment, yes you are right, but they all run on the other desktops so this isn’t an issue. What makes it even easier from a development point of view is using wxwidgets ( http://www.wxwidgets.org/ ). Only 1 GUI codebase to maintain on all 3 platforms! The awesome thing about a linux version is being able to run it on a cluster.

Oh, I should have asked, is it possible to just have a command-line version?

How to run it under wine?

I am getting following error:
tigra@tigarev:~/.wine/drive_c/3DBox$ ./BoxShot3D.exe
err:seh:raise_exception Exception frame is not in stack limits => unable to dispatch exception.

Alexey, I have been having exactly the same problem for about a year now with the raise_exception error. Unfortunitly, it doesn’t run under wine for me either. I can’t seem to trace the error and I have tried a complete re-install of wine etc.

A linux version would still be great. What about Qt for the GUI front end. Works just fine on Gnome / KDE / Mac and Windows.

I would also LOVE to see it run on Linux, natively or even using Wine, but so far I have been unsuccessful, getting the same “err:seh:raise_exception Exception frame is not in stack limits => unable to dispatch exception.” error.

Older versions of Boxshot3D work without problems with wine under Linux.

Only the current version fails. See winehq for working versions.

Thanks for the info, Erwin. What was the last versions you had successfully running under Linux?
