Reflections In Box Shot 3D 2.10

November 7th, 2008

After a few weeks of silence, I’ll try to start inform you about new features and shapes that will be added in ver.2.10. Today I want to talk about reflections.

Before 2.10 you were able to control initial transparency and distance of reflection. That’s enough for most cases, but more effects is better, so the new feature will be added. It is better to see, so here are some images (click to see full-size version):

Original reflection (Box Shot 3D 2.9):

Right now I polish it (reducing noise) and try to find it a name. Something like “brushed floor”. Any ideas? Suggestions? Comments?

Wow, nice effect!

Although I can’t suggest a name for this effect – because English is not my native language – I appreciate your efforts on offering new effects and shapes with the upcoming 2.10 release.

Thanks!

I think blurred reflections would be a proper name for this effect.

Well done!
The effect is really cool. It adds extra flair to the 3d models. Would it be possible to expand a little bit more on the new shapes? We’ve seen that Cover Action Pro 2 will be released next year and they have some pretty cool new shapes there — 3d open magazines, jacket hardback books. Do you think you can add a more realistic 3d of open books/magazines to your current list of shapes?

For reference, here is the CAP2 blog and new shapes:

Actually, most of these are already can be done using BS3D, but for sure there are some great ideas here.

Volkan, it seems that some of them are done with Box Shot 3D ;) Well, inspired.

Yep, that is what I meant. Most of their shapes look quite similar to Box Shot 3D, however, Cover Action Pro 2 offer very realistic 3D images of open magazines and books — which would be great to have on both PC and Mac platforms.

Just one idea for new shapes:

I know you are designing shapes for digital products covers but here is one nice idea which could expand possibly your market to new unexplored areas for you:

T- shirt shapes !!!
Jackets
hats

There is many fabric companies and similar, like logo creating companies or apparel selling who would be interested in this, at I least I´m :) ))))))

How about “Mirage”?

The most common rendering programs call it “blurred reflection” as Greg mentioned above. I would prefer this too.

I’m still a sucker for only one feature:
- Adjustable ‘openess’ (is that a word?) of the paperback books. Our books are less flexible than the current paperback shape suggests.

Gijs, completely adjustable book shape is a very complex thing because of many elements connected together. It seems that I will finally create something like this, but not right now.

Right now you may read new blog post about soft cover books in 2.10. I hope this is what you want.

Hi, Just bought BS3D and it’s great. However, I was wanting to know about extra shapes. I am currently working on a DVD box with slipcase that fits inside that holds 10 DVDs. The slipcase has it’s larger sides as triangles so you can easily reach the DVD’s inside. What I’d like is a tool to create this type of box or it added to the library. What do you think?

Lisa, thanks for purchasing the software.

A picture costs more than a thousand words, so please give me a link to the image you want to render with Box Shot 3D.

I’ll email it to you as I can’t see how to include an image in the blog.

Also, I am using the mac version and I am looking eagerly at the images in the gallery page on your site that have names like “opened dvd box” and I don’t seem to have those options. Is that a MAC v PC difference or have I missed something.

Lisa, check the “Angle” slider on the DVD-box settings pane. It opens DVD-box both under Mac and PC.
