Powered By Box Shot 3D

May 8th, 2008

We received report from Gijs van Dam (from Mindbus) about usage of Box Shot 3D in his project. Impressive, what do you think?

Hey,

We launched a new website for our client NieuwAmsterdam (New Amsterdam), it’s in dutch so you probably don’t understand a word from it, but that isn’t really important. What is important is the extensive use of Box Shot 3D to render the bookcovers.

Check here and also on the homepage. It also renders DVD’s.

Nice to mention that the client uses a CMS to upload plain cover-images and set book properties like type of binding and number of pages. Based on this information a box3d-file is created. On a different server, a windows service looks at regular intervals for new box3d-files and renders the covers from it. We chose to use a different server so the cpu on the webserver wouldn’t suffer from BoxShot3D. Within 5 minutes the rendered cover is placed on the webserver.

Pro’s

  • The 3D view gives possible buyers a better image of what to expect
  • The client has no (need for) knowledge of BoxShot3D
  • Because of the position of the book we can render covers in a relative early stage during the pre-printing phase of the book. The front part of the cover is available from the beginning but the back is not. Now the press and bookshops can see upcomming booktitles even before they actually exist.
  • It’s possible to change a shared property (say the reflection or the background image) and re-render all covers. (Although it takes a time with 400 covers and 2 minutes per cover)

Con’s

  • Because the thickness of the book is based on the number of pages, some books apear thicker on thinner than in real life because of the paper thickness. We are working on adding a property for paper thickness for each book.
  • Paperback books open up a bit wider than they would in real life. This is because paperbacks in holland use a harder, less flexible type of cover than in the US/UK.

Hope you like it!

Kind regards, Gijs van Dam
