Side images

October 20th, 2006

Today I want to talk about resolution of side images. What resolution is better to use?

Main rule is “large images are better”. Box Shot 3D uses advanced smoothing algorithms, so you will never see ugly downscaled images. But large images requires more memory and CPU time to process them. So we need some middle solution, that gives fine result without eating all your resources.

Actually, the “middle” depends from your target resolution. Your box will never be larger than it, so its sides will be never larger than it too. It is better to have side images resolution close to your target image dimensions.

If you want boxshot for your site at 128×128, there is no reason to use 1024×1024 images for sides. At other hand if you want boxshot for print and use 2048×2048 as a target, side images 128×128 will look ugly.

I would love some more sample pictures & projects. For instance, how to create a realistic CD cover or DVD (tall) cover. A “hall of fame” would also be appreciated – and perhaps a link or two to a google image search of the best boxes ever created (using any software).. Thanks!!!

We will add more objects in future versions of Box Shot 3D: CD, DVD, book, box+cd and maybe something else.
